Donald Morrison Zirkle, 85, of Cheyenne died Wednesday at Davis Hospice Center.
Mr. Zirkle was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Garden City, Kan.
He was inducted into the Army in December 1940 and was honorably discharged in October 1945.
While in the service, Don was wounded and survived the second worst naval disaster of World War II, Nov. 26, 1943, when the ship HMT Rhona was sunk by a German Missile. Don was rescued after many hours in the water.
Mr. Zirkle had a main part in the television documentary "The Rhona Disaster: WW II's Secret Tragedy."
Don received a Purple Heart in 1993 in a ceremony at F.E. Warren Air Force Base.
Mr. Zirkle married Kathryn Kenyon on Aug. 9, 1963, in Cheyenne. They made their home in Las Vegas, Nev., where he was a photographer for the city and local newspaper. After he retired, the Zirkles moved to Cottonwood Cove, Nev., for several years and then to Cheyenne in 1996.
He is survived by two daughters, Debbie Harmon of Lafe, Ark., and Donita Wingerter of Blanchard, Okla.; a twin sister, Dorothy Krider of Spring Valley, Calif.; a step-son, John Kenyon and wife, Beth of Cheyenne; 6 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; and 2 step-great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Zirkle was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Zirkle in 2004; parents, Lorenzo and Cressie Canfield Zirkle; a brother, Buel Zirkle; and a sister, Ruth Simon.
Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.
At his request, there will be no services.
