Obituary for Harold Stephen "Steve" Smith
Col. Harold Stephen "Steve” Smith (Ret), 66, of Cheyenne, died on Wednesday, June 8, 2016.
He was born on July 10, 1949 in Anderson, South Carolina, and was raised
in Pendleton, South Carolina. After graduating high school, Steve
joined the military which eventually brought him to Cheyenne 45 years
ago.
Steve enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and was discharged in 1974. He
then worked for the Laramie County Sheriff’s Department before receiving
his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Wyoming. His employment then
continued at the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for 12 years before
beginning a 40-year career with the Wyoming Air National Guard, retiring
in 2009. Steve served his country during a tour in Vietnam, a tour in
Thailand, and a tour in Iraq. While doing so, Steve achieved his
Master's Degree from the University of Wyoming.
Steve showed his strong support to various organizations throughout
Cheyenne. He was a mentor at Youth Alternatives for 32 years, in the
Korein Shrine for 38 years serving as Potentate in 1996, and was a
member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. One of his passions
was raising funds to assist children at the Shrine Hospitals. Steve had
numerous friends that he loved dearly.
Steve is survived by the love of his life Sandra "Sandie” Smith, whom he
married on February 26, 1971 in Cheyenne; a son of whom he was very
proud, Stephen "Russ” Smith (Kim) of Pendleton, South Carolina; a
daughter who had him wrapped around her finger, Stephanie "Shelli”
Stewart (Eric) of Cheyenne; a sister, Jane Smith Simpson (Allen) of
Pendleton; six grandchildren, Carsen Marae Smith, Ethan Zachary Smith,
Braeden Tailynn Stewart, Brock Eric Stewart, Braxden Stephen Jin Won
Stewart, and Angel Naveah Stewart; mother-in-law, Goldie Bottrell of
Eaton, Colorado; three brothers-in-law, Glenn and Ronald Bottrell, both
of Minatare, Nebraska, and Michael Bottrell (Diane) of Loveland,
Colorado; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Kuhn (John) and Tammy Stolz, both
of Eaton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Irene Smith; father-in-law, Glenn Bottrell and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel.
Services, which will include full military honors, will be Tuesday, 1:00
p.m., at Cheyenne Hills Church. The family will receive friends after
the service at the Cheyenne Shrine Club.
