Poppies Prevail: Past & Present

Carl Kirtley - 8/7/2025

We had a very successful day at the Superday event in Cheyenne conducting child ID kits with the help of the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office Possey volunteers and fundraising for VFW Post, District, and Department levels. As the day was winding down, we continued distributing Buddy Poppies and selling raffle tickets. A pair of ladies approached and asked me about the Buddy Poppies and where they originated. I explained that they were a replica of a flower that the VFW uses to raise funds for Veteran Relief. I continued by explaining they were designed after a flower that grew in a battlefield from World War I and immortalized in the poem, "In Flanders Fields”. The ladies then went on to tell me that they were from the Flanders Region of Belgium. As we continued to converse, I was delighted to hear that the battlefield is a well-kept memorial and that the Poppies still grow there. They were, in turn, excited to see the Poppy had survived as a symbol for Veterans and being actively used in fund raising. It was an awesome experience to learn a tradition we take part in can reach across continents and over a century of time to bring people together.
